Birthday party marathon

Today we had invitations to THREE birthday parties!! Three parties of people we love dearly, people whose children we lovely dearly, parties we didn’t want to miss. But how do you attend parties at 10:30 am downtown, 2:30pm on the southside and 4:30pm on the far northside? You don’t. You just do as much as you can until the wee-one tuckers out.

We started our day at the Children’s Museum, celebrating my college roommate’s twins 2nd birthday**. Seven kids, 6 adults caravaning around a crowded museum. Overwhelming, but fun. M’s favorite part, every visit, is the sand table in the Playscape area. Guess what we’re getting when the snow finally stops??

She lasted longer there than I imagined, and we then hit the road to head south for Z’s birthday. Z is Monkey’s 1/2 bio brother, and he turned 5 this week. J’s not been feeling well, so rather than do a huge party, she just had a few people over to her place for cake. We last saw J and Z in January for a belated Christmas visit, and we saw Monkey’s bio grams last spring. Again, much like last year’s party, it really was all about Z (which is the point) and we were like any other guests. Monkey was tired, and not all that sociable, but she did just fine.

I had no grand hopes of actually making it to our last party of the day anywhere near on time–but it was a hope that maybe we’d make it for a short bit after a nap of some sort. Monkey fell asleep in the car on the way home, and transferred easily–three hours later she’s still sound asleep, as is Daddy. I took a short nap and then called with our regrets–a birthday trifecta was not in the cards today. But hey, we got chocolate cake at party 1 and yellow cake at party 2…..so it was a pretty successful day after all!

**to be honest, we started our day at Walgreen’s, picking up pictures to distribute and buying wrapping paper for the gifts I would then wrap on my lap in the car…..**

A Belated Christmas Visit

We saw J and Z last night and had a nice visit. It’s funny because now that M can run around like a “big” kid, she and Z just played and played while we talked with J. We exchanged gifts–M is now the proud owner of a Colts Cheerleading dress and some Pop-On blocks from Fisher Price, which I must say ROCK, and Z loved his superman walkie-talkies and Star Wars shirt. J was amazed at how much hair M has now–it really is growing fast! M had no problems with the full flight of stairs, and quickly found and learned how to use the TV remote like it was her own. She recited her favorite words (tree, ball, ba-ba, mine, dance) when appropriate and she and Z put on a great dance contest with our cell phones’ ringtones.

We stayed for about two hours-it was really good to see them, but kind of sad. They are going through a lot–they always seem to be–nothing is ever easy in their world, and really, all we can do is listen. So we did. And we gave hugs, and reassurance, promises to keep in touch, which is about all we can do. But we do it as well as we can.

Color me *OXY* clean

Laundry doesn’t usually get me very excited…but I have to say that I am most jazzed by my discovery (5 years behind the rest of the world, I’m sure) of OxyClean. It seriously works, removing stains from things I didn’t think would ever come clean–tea off of a table cloth, make-up off a shirt, rotten baby food off of a onesie…you name it, it cleans it. LOVE THAT.

What else?? Tonight we are meeting J, Z, and K for a belated Christmas gathering. We’re bringing pizza over, along with a new slew of pictures (which are currently being printed at Walgreens while I type) and presents for Z. It should be fun! We haven’t seen K since June, so I’m sure she’ll be excited to see M–she wasn’t quite walking the last time they met! Funny how time flies. G isn’t able to make it, but we decided to go ahead and see everyone else tonight, or else it will be Easter before we see everyone again.

Also new this week–we have a sitter! A babysitter. Not a mom friend, not a licensed daycare provider or someone with a state teaching license or a relative–an actual teenage babysitter. I don’t know why, but I’m excited. Probably because I’ve been having flashbacks to my teenage babysitting days. Anyway, we have a lovely sophomore in high school at our church who’s the oldest of FIVE children. I’d heard she was great. The rumors were true. Wednesday night L was back to school (new semester!) and I had a meeting I wanted to attend. So I hired a babysitter. It’s the first time I’ve paid a babysitter since M__ was born, if you don’t count the wad of cash we spend on daycare and the assorted giftcards/lunches/bartering system in place by my group of friends. M did just fine–played and went to bed with no problem at all! Nothing like coming home to a good report! Maybe L and I will go out to dinner sometime in the near future. tee hee hee…
