Happy Birthday to You, You’re a Hundred and Two

Everyone knows that song, right? Have you ever sung it for real though? To someone who is 102 years old? We did this weekend. I kid you not.

My parents and brother went to her assisted living center for lunch, and watched her receive guests as the all wished her well and thanked her for the cake. Sunday, our whole family celebrated with her with a lunch in her honor at my parents house. She sang songs, she told stories, we watched YouTube videos featuring “the Peabody” dance. She’s decided she was so thin back then because the dance is really fast and she must have burned a lot of calories dancing.12113546_580107465471388_4966567115213973708_o

Megan re-wrote the birthday song, because she didn’t want to insult her great grandma. I think I like her version better:

Happy birthday to you,

You’re one hundred and two,12094984_580107445471390_3497114865259477831_o

You smell like a FLOWER,

AND YOU LOOK LIKE ONE TOO!

Smart kid.

Anyway, it was full day of celebrating, complete with ice cream cake. And she wasn’t about to take any help when it came to blowing out the candles!

Three Cheers for October mini-skit:

Location: My home

Date: October 1, 2015

Conversation:

Meg: “Mom, what day is it? ”

Me: “October 1.”

Meg: “Hooray! Only 30 more days until Halloween!”

We love Halloween around these parts. The kids love to plan their costumes, and well, I admit it, we all love candy. We decorate with pumpkins, we burn some pumpkin spice candles, and we can’t wait to trick or treat in our new neighborhood!

My kids were costume ready by about October 2nd this year. Meg’s going to Maleficent and soooo excited. Andrew’s going to be “the ghost reaper” which may or may not be a real thing, but he’s pretty excited about his mask and the new sword he got for the occasion. We will probably do a trunk or treat event somewhere, and then be in costume most of Halloween day.  We might even find some other excuses (Not that you really need one! It’s October!) to wear the costumes out and about.

September Top Ten

IMG_7881 IMG_7887Hey…October isn’t over yet, right? Still plenty of time for a September roundup!

Here, in no partilcular order, are the highlights of life at Casa de Kahuna in September:

  • I turned 42! It was unremarkable, but better than the alternative.
  • IMG_7850My friend Brooke got married, and it was a beautiful celebration at the Indianaolis Arts Garden. If you ever get a chance to go to an event there, GO.
  • My mom came to visit!!
  • Meg and I discovered the wonder that is Maleficient. Oh my goodness. Grab your favorite tween and go watch it already
  • A fun piece went up at Indy with Kids of mine- Nature at Night.
  • Speaking of which, Mam stayed up with us and watched the eclipse. I”m not sure who had more fun- Leilan & I or her.
  • Our Girl Scout troop started meeting! I”m ridiculously excited to be a leader this year.
  • We’ve started prep for the Fox’s First Reconciliation & First Communion.
  • We had a magical day at Holiday World at the beginning of the month. Serious fun from open-to-close for everyone. I think we’ve decided to make it a summer tradition.
  • We got to see the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle exhibit at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis– TURTLE POWER!
  • We made it to Mallow Run Winery for the last outdoor concert of the season with friends! So much fun, so many laughs- we’re already planning to meet there again at the first sign of spring.

September was good. Full of family and friends and fun – all of my favorite things!
