"She’s a happy, go-lucky girl"

Ah….the words every parent wants to see on her child’s first “report card”. Ok, it wasn’t a report card–it was a comment on her developmental checklist from daycare. Much to most people’s surprise, I had M’s first parent/teacher conference today. And it was great. Not only because Ms. A said all nice things about M (minus her budding graffiti artist and acrobatic tendencies) but because we had a chance to chat uninterrupted about things we’ve both been observing. So we are on the same page where she is developmentally, and I got to hear lots of cute little bits about what M does during the day. And in talking with her, I can tell that she loves her job and my child, despite (or maybe due in part) the fact that M’s been timing her BM’s to happen about 5 minutes after Ms. A arrives each day. Seriously. Each day now for the past two weeks. And she still laughs about it every day.

So where is she developmentally?? Well, at 15 months she can kick a ball, loves books, climbs, eats with a spoon, follows simple directions, and the list goes on and on. Did I mention this is a form for 18-24 month olds? What I like about the form she filled out is that if there were many boxes checked “unobserved”, you could take that form to your doc or call your health dept for a First Steps intervention. For us, we need to just be aware that she’s learning to sit nicely at the table (no straps or restraints!), and is still learning to balance on odd surfaces like playground mulch. She sometimes tires out when using her spoon, is learning NOT to color on things like the trash can, and NOT to climb on the lunch tables.

What will be cool will be seeing where she goes from here!

Situation: exactly the same

Yes, it seems that I’m in the percentage of people that the “select nerve block” doesn’t really help. He found the nerve (when he touched it I felt it down to my toes), applied medication, and um, nothing happened. I mean, the local numbness stayed for about an hour. After that? Not really any different. Except the injection site was sore. Nice, huh? Next in line at the doc’s office is outpatient surgery (to “shave” a little of the disk material that’s hitting the nerve and causing pain). Not ready for that. So I’m exploring other options, like PT or a chiropractor or something. I’ve never been to a chiropractor, but certainly NOT getting cut open can’t hurt as badly as getting cut open.

It other things, M seems have recovered from her cold and is learning words left and right. In a week, she’s started using “jacket”, “cracker”, “keys”, and “stars”. Rather an eclectic mix of nouns, but I’ll take them!! Her last two canine teeth (bottom) are almost in. Once they are done, then we *should* have a break before her last set of molars. How is it that she’s got all of her teeth? A year ago she was completely toothless.

The working world drama is still turning…Sybil has been sick for two days, so today was her first day back. Everything “seemed” normal. We know it’s not. Now we are just waiting for her to go on another bender, so to speak. I’ll be sure to transcribe as much of the drama to the blogosphere as possible….

The Bliss that is Target, amongst other things

Yesterday baby girl and I went shopping at Target for her Christmas dress and shoes, and the fixings for rice krispie treats. We browsed for a bit, found a very cute black velvet dress for her with a red bow (making it sort of an empire waist) and holly berries all over it. We also found her first pair of black patent leather shoes. Oh the joy.

After Target, we went to a Toddler Story hour at one of the branches of our local library–it was a bit of a drive, but totally worth it. We heard stories, sang, danced, did finger plays and played with toys. And we signed up for Indy Reads, got a tote bag and free book…and (are you sitting down?)…M got her first library card. My inner-bookworm left the library feeling satisfied. The rest of me was worn out-while I was filling out the paper work for all of these treats, M discovered how to open the drop box for old glasses, crawled all over the reference dept and almost walked out the front door.

What a morning.

After my last entry about work, I have to admit that I was a little hesitant to go in on Friday. But Sybil had left the building and my co-worker was calm cool and collected. Although she did ask if I’d recieved her email, which I hadn’t, and she started wondering aloud who she may have sent it to instead of me….Anyway, I’ll only be there a short time Monday before I leave for my drs appt, and heck, T-day is only a week away. Surely I’ll make it, right?
