Updated: The comments are now closed! The winner is BNPositive, comment #1 (how often does #1 win? seriously?) Congrats, Jason, and thanks everyone for playing along!!

It’s still Birthday Week here at Casa de Kahuna, and the fox is enjoying each and every one of his presents. It’s hard to say which is his favorite, but something he’s played with every chance he gets is his new Little Tikes TotSports T-Ball Set.

Play Ball!

He woke up Wednesday morning asking, “I play with my baseball toy now?” (unfortunately, we had to leave the house), and it was the first thing he reached for when we did get home that evening. This morning he started batting in his pajamas. It seems we’ve got a baseball fan on our hands.

The first team I ever rooted for was the New York Yankees, and I remember my dad and my uncle loading up the four of us cousins and taking us to Yankee Stadium for games. We had a team yearbook from the early 80s featuring Reggie Jackson, Goose Gossage & Bucky Dent.

When we moved to Indiana, we repeated the ritual, this time with the Cubs. It made sense, since at the time, the American League never met the National League except in the playoffs or local games. We quickly formed an allegiance to Ryne Sanberg, Rick Sutcliffe and manager Jim Frey. As kids, we lived the excitement of the Cubs getting into the pennant race in 1984, and everyone was singing the song, “Go Cubs Go”. Plus, we had the iconic Harry Carey on WGN.  (Did you know I knew a little about baseball?)

Here in Indianapolis, we don’t have a local major league team to root for, and it seems most grown ups root for their childhood favorites. We do, however, have a minor league team that plays at Victory Field, the Indianapolis Indians, and taking in a game is huge fun. We’ve taken the kids once, when the Fox was an infant, but we just haven’t made it to a game these past two summers (such a shame, I know).

We’ve got plans this summer though.

THE GIVEAWAY

The Kahunas will be attending the Family of Farmers Night at Victory Field on July 19th! Whoo hoo.

Want to join us? (you don’t have to sit by us, honest)

Family of Farmers wants to give one lucky reader up to EIGHT tickets for July 19th’s 7pm game, and will provide the food and the fun for the night. How can you beat that??

To enter, there are three quick things to do: 1) Like Family of Farmers on Facebook (if you’re a facebooker). 2) Follow Family of Farmers on Twitter (if you’re a Tweep) 3) Leave ONE comment, preferably about baseball. What’s your favorite team? Did you play as a kid? Do you get to Victory Field? What’s your Fantasy Baseball team look like?

When you leave your comment, be sure to enter an email (on the form, not the comment itself) where you can be reached. The comments will be open until Tuesday, June 28th at 9pm. I’ll pick a comment via random.org and  notify the winner via email and we’ll take it from there.

Good luck!

P.S. Comment moderation is on, so if you’re new here, welcome, and I’ll be approving comments as fast as I can!

Day Camp for Everyone!

It is now officially summer, although summer weather’s been making an appearance on and off for the past few weeks. Summer time means a lot of different things, and now that I’m a mom to a near first-grader, summer means day camp and swimming lessons. Earlier this spring, I waded through the sea of options for MaM. It’s been two weeks, and it’s going well, which is a huge sigh of relief (today’s sunburn and lost glasses not withstanding). She’s come home tired and happy every day, and she’s even run into a few kids she knows from church and from school. She’s loving the rock climbing and swimming every day, and doesn’t even mind the imposed “quiet time”. She went to sleep tonight with dreams of their field trip to the zoo tomorrow.

Not all childcare plans pan out the way you hope, though. and that is why I’m interrupting this blog post with a PSA:

The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis offers programs for kids of all ages. I had the chance to speak to YMCA rep, Tangela Floyd, on the importance of the services the Y provides. She told me that their main goal is to keep kids of all ages busy while school is out. The YMCA is a dedicated to being accessible to all, so their fees are based on income, and financial assistance is available. Kids enjoy swimming, games and many other activities, all designed for them to have a happy and healthy summer, while their parents know they are in a safe environment. We talked about the challenge of finding a place for kids in the summer when parents are at work, and how it’s not easy. The Y can even accommodate young teens, because, as Tangela said, some twelve year olds can stay at home by themselves, and some really can’t. If you are finding that you need to make some childcare arrangements for the summer, see what the Y has to offer! There are still openings in their various camps around town.

Fine print: This is the first in a series of posts on what the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis has to offer. Next week, I dive into their Aquatics programs.

The Joy of this Boy

I cannot believe that Friday night, we went to his preschool orientation.

That he’s made a light saber out of his infant toy (the Fisher Price Rock N Stack rings).

That he’s over three feet tall and nearly forty pounds.

I certainly haven’t documented his life nearly as well as I documented his sister’s (what they say about second children? it’s all true), but he’s growing up, whether I blog about it or not.

He plays with his cars, his guys, and his tools.

He’d live on hot dogs, chicken nuggets, graham crackers and yogurt if I let him.

He’s been planning his “Lightning” birthday for weeks — a chocolate cake, with Lightning McQueen, please. He knows there will be presents involved, and that it’s going to be “his” day. He’s got a  Batcave coming for his birthday, and I think it’s going to be a BIG hit.

In many ways, I can’t believe that he’s going to be three, in other ways I can’t believe he’s only been on earth for three years, because I certainly can’t imagine life without him!

Happy, Happy THIRD Birthday, my sweet, sweet boy! (I’m getting this post up early, Tuesday’s his big day)
