Thank you very much!

Imagine my surprise when I found out that I was listed as one of the top 50 adoption blog’s out there at A Child Chosen! Thanks, Marcie. Does this mean I need to post more about adoption? It’s funny, how after awhile, it just becomes the fabric of our lives. If you are here for the first time with adoption on your mind, please check out the labels “open adoption” and “first birthday”–that’s where the adoption content is, for the most part.

Today we picked up MAM’s school pictures. She looks SO OLD. She also looks exactly like her paternal grandmother, minus the 1940’s dress and curls. And I love that I know that about her, and I love that we will be able to pull out Grandma K’s pictures and show them side by side with MAM’s as she gets older. Right now, that’s what open adoption is on one front.

On other fronts, there are things going on and there are days that I wish I didn’t know. Most days, I’m glad I’m aware now, but it’s not easy. More on that as it develops.

A weekend of fun and firsts

Happy Birthday Monkey

MAM had a fabulous day Friday, if I do say so myself. Sprinkler day at Rainbow, swimming with friends at home, cheeseburgers and french fries for dinner, French silk pie for her birthday cake, some prezzy’s, what else could a two year old ask for? She was up til almost 11pm, what with all the sugar and toys and what not!

Saturday morning we were all dog-tired, but we dragged ourselves out of bed to head downtown to meet MAM’s bmom, J, and bbro, Z. We went to the state museum and to the IMAX theater there. If you’re going to go to see your first movie, you may as well make it a big one!

The IMAX show was Sharks, 3D and it was really, really cool! MAM was really tired and didn’t wear her glasses, but I did, and it was wild. It really did seem like the jellyfish were swimming in front of us!

MAM made it through the whole 45 minute movie, she got a little antsy, but did just fine overall. We had a good visit with J and Z–not much is new on their front.

After lunch, MAM fell asleep on the way home, and stayed asleep when we brought her upstairs. BgK and I quickly followed suit–we both crashed for two hours as well!

This afternoon we’re off to a cookout after nap time.

The weekend fun just never ends!

This morning’s newspaper

***Ok, the links aren’t working AT ALL…so if you’re interested, check the May 23rd Indianapolis Star— indystar.com!

This morning there were two articles in the paper that were interesting enough to me that I took the paper to work to read them in my “down” time. I thought y’all would find them interesting too…..

1. Adoptive Parents Maternity Leave Issues
This article is a good one about the discrimination families formed by adoption face. We are VERY lucky–hubby’s company granted him the same leave as all dads get (1 week or maybe 10 days? I don’t really remember….) as well as adoption reimbursement options. Even though we know my employer is unique (in oh-so-many-ways), I was able to cash in my sick day bank and ended up with 8 weeks paid as well. Such is not the case at all companies. The author also addresses the fact that many employees have to disclose that they are in fact adopting because the time table is so vague. My conversation with my boss went something like this, “We are officially ‘waiting’ at the adoption agency now. I may have a week’s notice, I may have a day’s notice, I may get called at 10am to go pick up my child. I may be matched three months beforehand and come home from the hospital empty handed. It may take up to two years. It may happen on the first day of school. That’s what I can tell you.” Crazy, but true, and oh-so-common.

2. Period-Stopping Birth Control Pill
Ok, the above link is to a conservative website, but it’ s the exact same article I read this morning in the local paper. This pill completely stops periods–except for random bleeding and spotting, which was apparently annoying enough for people to drop out of the study. Ok, here’s the thing–while I know no woman who looks forward to Aunt Flow’s visit every month, wouldn’t it freak you out to never have a period?? Sort of like the article said–how’d you ever guess if you were pregnant? Is it really healthy, for lack of a better term, for all of that “build up” to just hang there indefinitely? Granted, the hormones would control some of that, but still. Of course, I can totally see if you go anemic every month, have to miss work, etc because of excruciating cycles, but other than that, wouldn’t some of the other pills be a happier medium?? I wonder what Tampax thinks about all this!
