Traditions are funny things- you can *try* to make something a tradition, but it may or may not take. Other times, you do a thing, then you do it again, and suddenly everyone just knows it’s what you do.
I present to you, Waffle Day, which is always December 20th.
Years ago, my friends at Hallmark gifted me some Keepsake ornaments, including a little old-timey radio. Every day, you turn the dial, and “Dash Deerbuck here, from station N-O-E-L” gives you a report from the North Pole as a Christmas countdown.
The first year we got the radio, I kept it off the tree because the kids were little and I didn’t want them touching the tree to get to the radio. The second year, the kids insisted the radio stay on the kitchen table because “that’s where it goes.” and we all found the humor in the broadcast from the 20th of December, and from that day forward, we celebrated Waffle Day.
Here’s the little diddy – you’ll figure out the tune soon enough:
“Here we come a waffling, with waffles on our plates,
Pass the maple syrup, these waffles sure taste great!
Love and joy come to you, and all your waffles too, “
“..You guys! It’s WASSAILING! ”
“But we love waffles!!!!!”
And now, every year on December 20th, we eat waffles for dinner.
Sometimes, life really is this simple.
