#NoTimeForFlu – Learn the Facts, Bust the Myths

fluLast year at this time, I was hella-sick. A nasty, nasty case of pneumonia sidelined me for weeks, and I really wasn’t myself until well after the holidays. During that time, I was hyper aware  that I wasn’t quite well enough to get a flu shot, but that the minute I was well enough, I needed one. I never wanted to get that sick again, and if a quick shot would do the trick, sign me up.

I’ll admit it- I never made getting a flu shot a priority until last fall. Now, getting the family vaccinated is on our Fall Break to-do list (hooray!). Why are we getting vaccinated?

To sum it up in a hashtag? #NoTimeForFlu

Seriously. With work and schoo
l and gymnastics and Scouts and church and life…we have no time to be sick.

Here are some quick MYTHS about the flu and the flu vaccine-

I only need to be vaccinated once – MYTH!

TRUTH- You need to be vaccinated every year, because each vaccine is formulated with the strains of flu expected to wreak havoc.

I can get sick from the flu vaccine- MYTH!

TRUTH – Contrary to the misinformation
out there, you can’t get the flu from the flu vaccine. You just can’t- the contents of the vaccine included dead viruses, which can’t infect you.

It’s too early to be thinking about the flu- it’s only fall, y’all- MYTH!

When I was knocked on my rear last September, they did a flu test. The doc said they were already seeing a lot of positive flu tests….in late September. As soon as the vaccines are available, it’s time to get vaccinated.

Ready to get your flu shot? Visit the Minute Clinic inside your local CVS pharmacy – they vaccinated patients ages 18 months and over at most locations (call yours to confirm they have the dose you need).

September Top Ten

IMG_7881 IMG_7887Hey…October isn’t over yet, right? Still plenty of time for a September roundup!

Here, in no partilcular order, are the highlights of life at Casa de Kahuna in September:

  • I turned 42! It was unremarkable, but better than the alternative.
  • IMG_7850My friend Brooke got married, and it was a beautiful celebration at the Indianaolis Arts Garden. If you ever get a chance to go to an event there, GO.
  • My mom came to visit!!
  • Meg and I discovered the wonder that is Maleficient. Oh my goodness. Grab your favorite tween and go watch it already
  • A fun piece went up at Indy with Kids of mine- Nature at Night.
  • Speaking of which, Mam stayed up with us and watched the eclipse. I”m not sure who had more fun- Leilan & I or her.
  • Our Girl Scout troop started meeting! I”m ridiculously excited to be a leader this year.
  • We’ve started prep for the Fox’s First Reconciliation & First Communion.
  • We had a magical day at Holiday World at the beginning of the month. Serious fun from open-to-close for everyone. I think we’ve decided to make it a summer tradition.
  • We got to see the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle exhibit at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis– TURTLE POWER!
  • We made it to Mallow Run Winery for the last outdoor concert of the season with friends! So much fun, so many laughs- we’re already planning to meet there again at the first sign of spring.

September was good. Full of family and friends and fun – all of my favorite things!
