Multi-Tasking

I’m not big on house cleaning. Not that we live in filth, but, well, let’s just say there’s room for improvement. Something does motivate me though, is reading about germs–the billion germs in your kitchen sink and sponges, the fecal matter on the bottom of my purse, you know those kinds of reports. Reports like this one.

Sunday I shared that I had actually cleaned my microwave. Not only did I clean my microwave, I disinfected my kitchen sponge at the same time. Talk about multi-tasking.

I simply soaked my kitchen sponge with water and microwaved it for about 45 seconds. This disinfects the sponge, and loosens all the baked on nastiness in the microwave, making it much easier to clean.

Theoretically, I could do this every evening after dinner, or at least once a week….

  1. this is right up my alley! great tip! i hate cleaning. although by some miracle of God, my hubby actually cleaned the microwave on Sunday!

  2. I do this every night but I nuke the sponge for 2 minutes. My sponges last at least a month that way. Though I have stopped microwaving actual food–I wonder if the microwave is so good at killing germs, what the heck is it doing to the nutrients in my food?! At least my paranoia keeps me from ever having to clean my microwave 🙂

  3. You know, I stopped using the sponge because of the reports about germs. We now use the “dishcloth” that goes in the washing machine for disinfecting. That means we go through tons of dishcloths.

Now I hear the sponge can actually be USEFUL for killing germs and might help me keep the kitchen clean … it might be time to switch back!

  4. Ha. I’m SO not a cleaner. And my sis and I were discussing her cleanly habits just yesterday (as she 409d down the side of her stove and scrubbed, while I watched her)….

I think I just need to have her come over and live in my house for 3 days. She’ll get it whipped into shape!
