I promise to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth….

mental note to self: the next time you go on vacation, give yourself at least two days to detox from said vacation

Getting out of the car and onto the scale is not a pleasant experience. But it really wasn’t as bad as it could have been.

I’m up 2.5 lbs since my weigh-in two weeks ago. It really coulda been worse. A lot worse.

In our “Real World”-esque house, the food seem to grow like the loaves and the fishes throughout the week. The nearest grocery store was twenty minutes away, and a trip was made almost daily to get things we ran out of that we didn’t think we’d run out of so soon. And junk food was brought into the house each and every time.

Here’s the thing–at home, I can honestly say I’ve made that lifestyle change–I don’t buy loads of cookies, snack cakes, snack mixes etc, because I know have no impulse control when it comes to those things. So I just don’t buy them. But if I have the opportunity I shall eat them…….and eat them often. And once I start eating stuff like that, my usual snack of fruit seems a lot less appealling.

Ah well. You live and learn. And learn again and again and again. My shorts still fit. The Nutty Bar tasted really good (I did only have one bar). The Chips Ahoy (with chocolate and peanut butter chunks) tasted really good. They tasted really good every time I ate one or two. Which was a lot. (OK, several times every single day–no lie) I only had 2 ice cream cones the entire week, one piece of cheesecake and one creme brulee. And there were potato chips, cheesy snack mix (with sun chips, pretzels and cheese doodles all coated in cheese), and probably 10 other things I’m forgetting. And THE WINE. Oh was the wine flowing. And the sex on the beach (the drink, silly!). Starting just about everyday by 3 o’clock, the drinking commenced. Maybe that’s why we were all still talking to each other.

After looking over the list, it’s amazing I only consumed 8750 calories that I didn’t expend! I did walk a bit every day, and I hardly ever took the elevator (affectionately known as the ella-gator by M) up and down the two full flights of stairs. And there was walking on the shore. And floating in the pool. I wouldn’t call it swimming or even pool walking, but hey, having to kick a little bit over to the side of the pool to get your drink burns more calories than lounging in a chair (which I also did a lot of).

So there you have it. I’m off to eat a green leaft now, very hungry caterpillar style.

OBX 2007

After 10 days and 2000 miles, we’re back home again in Indiana.

The Kahuna family and extended clan spent last week in Salvo, NC, a lovely little hamlet nestled in the middled of Cape Hatteras National seashore. To say that our vacation was fantastic would be an understatement. I don’t even know where to begin. So I’ll start with our 3 story, 8 bedroom beach house with pool, hot tub and every ammenity you might need. We were sharing the house with my extended family–a total of 16 people. Guess what? Everyone was still speaking when we were all packing up to go. Impressive, no?

Wednesday we went over to Roanoke Island (of lost colony fame) and visited an aquarium. SO. MUCH. FUN. So many fish. Including one called the “slippery dick”. That one made me (and my SIL) giggle.

Besides the aquarium, we didn’t really “do” any other big attractions. Mostly we swam in the pool, sat on assorted decks and drank wine. There were board games every night, once the Monkey fell asleep. The falling asleep was tough, but once she got there she stayed asleep, bless her heart.

Behind me, the Monkey and Ariel you can see the sound (and our neighbor’s pool). Across the water is the mainland of North Carolina, though you’d never know it. I don’t know how wide the sound was where we were, but there really was no sign of land on the other side. Our neighborhood was sound-side. Across Hwy 12 was the ocean. It was less than a 15 minute walk away.
Lighthouses speckled the whole string of islands–the waters are notoriously treacherous. Each one is painted a slightly different pattern. This the Bodie Island lighthouse, and it’s still in operation today.

There may be more vacation posting as the week goes on, but at least now you have picture proof I really was at the seashore!
