The Kitchen is Closed (It’s Time for Cool Treats and Grilled Meats)

Who has time to eat when there are water cannons to shoot?

I read somewhere that we only get eighteen summers with our kids. Really, it’s a lot fewer than that- when I think of childhood summers, it’s always the years I was in elementary school. Old enough to remember, but before I started doing more things with my friends/away from home than I did with my family. This means I have *maybe* five summers left with MaM to make the bulk of those memories.

I want her to remember our summer evenings outside on the patio and eating popsicles. I want her to remember evenings where we stopped swimming just long enough to eat supper, and then headed back to the pool. There is no need to spend an extra second in the kitchen when there are memories to be made.

I should hang a sign on my stove: “Closed for the Season”. Once the weather heats up, I don’t do much in the kitchen. I mean, we still eat, but I moved the cooking to the grill and everything else goes in the refrigerator.

I attribute my affection for grilling to my parents, who pretty much cook out all summer long. Even if it’s too hot to eat outside, grilling outside keeps the house cool. You know what else happens when  I grill? There are no dishes. Most everything I grill goes directly on grill, and what doesn’t gets cooked in a tin foil pouch, because I am classy.

Tin Foil Potatoes

3-4 baking potatoes

olive oil to coat potatoes

salt and pepper

1. Slice or dice the potatoes

2. Brush with olive oil

3. Sprinkle with salt and pepper (and garlic, if you’re so inclined)

4. Place potatoes in a tin foil packet so that the potatoes are in a single layer.

5. Cook on a medium-hot grill for about 30 minutes, turning once.

Seriously, does it get any easier than that? These potatoes are a staple on my summer dinner menu, and even MaM likes to eat them (with ketchup). You can pretty much grill any vegetable this way- squash cooks faster, carrots take a bit longer.

Summer time isn’t so much about the grill for the kids though. They don’t fully appreciate grilled steaks, or any meat at this point (but for those who do, check out these Grilled T-Bones).

For the kids, it’s the dessert. Specifically, desserts of the frozen persuasion. Hot summer nights get instantly cooler when I pull out the ice cream or the popsicles. We pretty much stick to frozen treats in the summer, because again, remember, my kitchen is closed.

This summer we’ve gotten a little more creative, and have started attempted making our own popsicles. And just like pizza, even if they don’t turn out, there’s no such thing a a bad popsicle. These popsicles came out just fine:

Mmm…chocolate chip pudding pops with a chocolate shell.

Indiana State Fair: The Year of the Dairy Cows {a Giveaway}(closed)

Thanks for playing! The only thing I don’t like about the Indiana State Fair is that it signals the end of summer. Other than that, it’s the icing on my proverbial summer cake. It’s everything that is special about Indiana, all rolled into a two week blitz on the corner of E. 38th Street.

One of the highlights from the 2011 Fair

There is  food.

There are animals.

There is a Midway full of entertainment.

There are displays and sideshows and cheese sculpture.

There are things that you just have to see to believe (have you seen the world’s largest boar? It’s kind of a State Fair “thing”).

There is also something that just says “Hoosier” to me. For the second year, Indiana Family of Farmers is partnering with Feeding Indiana’s Hungry (FIsH) to donate one pound of food for every State Fair visitor who completes the Recipe Trail.

The Recipe Trail, you ask?

The Recipe Trail consists of 8 locations around the Fairgrounds, plus one more stop at the Indiana Family of Farmer’s booth in the DuPont Food Pavilion for the 9th and final card. Upon finishing the trail, participants will receive a prize, plus an entry for a Frigidaire chest freezer. More details and the official rules can be found on IFOF’s website.

This year the Indiana State Fair is honoring the Dairy Cow (somewhat related: Indiana is #2 in the nation for ice cream and frozen yogurt production). Be on the look out for Indiana’s Dairy mascot, Buttercup. Rumor has it she’s going to be celebrating the duration of the fair!

As part of that celebration, Indiana Family of Farmer’s provided a fun giveaway- this year, in addition to TWO tickets for admission to the Indiana State Fair, the lucky winner will also receive a set of Dairy coupons (2 Milkshakes, 2 Grilled Cheeses, 2 Kids Meals)!

Eleven Years and Counting

There are three posts I write every summer, regardless of how lax I become on every other blog front. In June, I write a birthday post for the boy. In August, I write a birthday post for the girl (I’m prepping her 7th *gasp*).

July belongs to our wedding anniversary. Every year, I post the same pictures from our wedding, because well, there are only so many to choose from. This year, I raided my Facebook account for photos of us.

One of the many things I love about Leilan is that he is always taking photos, and he’s always snapping pictures of the two of us. Sometimes, I roll my eyes, but secretly I love it.

I think he knows that.
