Tonight we signed MaM up for Daisy Scouts. She was a little disappointed cookies weren’t involved in the Service unit meeting, because really, that’s all she knows of Girl Scouts. I can’t wait for her to learn more……..the songs, the field trips, the camping, the friendship, I get wistful just thinking about it. Maybe I haven’t mentioned it before, but  I in scouts from second grade on through til 12th grade. YES, 12th grade! I earned my Silver Award, but never did find a Gold Award project I could stick with long enough to finish it (it’s the equivalent of the Eagle in Boy Scouts, and even more elusive). I was a resident camp enthusiast, and became a camp counselor the minute I graduated from high school.

I don’t know if MaM will be as gung-ho about it as I was, but I do so hope she’ll enjoy it!

I SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED a NaPoBloMo, which is kind of amazing. And really, it wasn’t a big deal or very tedious, except for this past weekend when I posted really lame posts from my iPhone really late at night. Other than that? It was fun.

But here’s the new: I have a new internet gig over at SavvySource.com.  I am the new city editor for Indianapolis, and I’ve worked my fingers to the bone building content for the Indianapolis page to launch. In about two weeks, I’ve built all of the content currently on the page. I now know when and where storytimes, free movies and special events are happening around the city. It is very cool and very fun and I’m looking forward to featuring ALL of what Central Indiana has to offer!!

So….go check it out if you’re so inclined. And let me know if there’s something around Indy you love that I’ve omitted, or if there’s a special event coming up that I can add. I’ll be adding events weekly!

Always listening to my crazy tales

If you haven’t seen it already, Grown In My Heart is hosting a Mother’s Day photo contest/carnival  this week. I’ve known about this project for almost two weeks, but here I am, getting my link in under the wire.

This project has been good for a few things, including bringing to my attention that I don’t have many photos of my mom on my computer. Also, I either need to steal my dad’s files that he’s been scanning for the past 5 years or start getting my printed photos on a portable hard drive somehow.

Anyway……this photo was taken almost seven years ago at my surprise 30th birthday party. I have . NO idea what I was telling her, but she, as she always is, was interested. Because she’s my mom and she’s awesome.

(an aside…that’s my grandma (dad’s mom) in the background, at the time she was not quite 90, now she’s a spry 96.5!!!)

A  Apples. I love to eat apples. Not so much a fan of the “apple theme” that seems to go along with being a teacher. No, really.
B Boy,I am mom to one boy, and boy is he different from my girl! The obsession with wheels and things that go seemed to happen shortly after he arrived home.
C Cake. Cookies. Candy. Chocolate.
D Domain name! I own my own domain! It’s all of about 1 month old, and only about two weeks live on the internet.
E Elephant, I was one for my tap-dance recital in kindergarten. I can still sing the song.
F Feet, size 10 feet, or small canoes, really.
G Gotchababy was actually a name generated by Blogger way back. I liked it, and it stuck.
H Hope. Is there anything without it?
I Ice cream, sweet, delicious ice cream.
J Jail, I’ve toured a few, but always as a visitor, never a resident.
K Kieran, That’s my hubby’s middle name. I LOVE that name.
L Little feet, we have two pairs of little feet running around our house. Man, can they run (well, one crawls, but he is fast)!
M is my absolute favorite letter of the alphabet. It was even before my initials were 3M.
N No, I feel like I say this constantly to the boy. He doesn’t seem to mind though–he just smiles and continues to go about his business!
O Octopus, sometimes I think I’d get more done with more arms.
P Pizza, hot, cheesy, melty thin-crust pizza.
Q Quiet. My house is hardly ever quiet. I relish it when it is…at least the first 30 minutes or so.
R Rice Milk, is my daughter’s drink of choice. I buy it a case at a time from Trader Joe’s.
S School is starting in one short month.
T Teacher. I am going to start my 13th year of teaching in one month. HOW did that happen?
U Upside. There’s an upside to just about everything. I work really hard to find it.
V Very. Very hungry, very busy, very tired, very content, very.
W Wings. A new game with my daughter, she likes to pretend she has them.
X Xrays.It seems like one of us is always getting x-rayed for something. Most recently, a chest x-ray for the boy’s cough.
Y Yellow. I love it when kids say, Lell-yow instead. I may have pronounced it that way so MAM would. No one can prove it though.
Z Zoo. I feel like my life is a zoo sometimes. A lot of it is of my own making.

8 years ago this afternoon, I married my best friend. The day was hotter than Hades, but we didn’t really mind too much. We were too busy being in love, surrounded by friends and family, and too busy PARTYING to really care (all venues and vehicles were air-conditioned to the max).

Since then, we’ve built a crazy-quilt of a life together, including some travel, two adoptions, a cozy townhouse, and an obsession with Saturn. I can’t imagine life any other way.

Happy Anniversary, BgK!

*we were married on a Friday…and yes, we played “Friday I’m in Love”. Our first dance? “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head” by Dean Martin.

Thursday we visited with my family, including my aunt and uncle in from New Jersey. I love when they visit because I love them….but I also LOVE that they always bring Jersey Bagels. Jersey Bagels are nothing like the limp, tasteless mounds of breakfast bread the big chains try to pass off. Jersey Bagels have a firm crust, and chewy deliciousness inside you can’t get in any other bread product, except for maybe Jersey Rye, but that’s a carb for another post. Anyway, my aunt and uncle were there, along with their gift of bagels and life was good.

The car ride up to my parents’ house? Was long. Oh so long. It was a good thing I brought snacks. The backseat enjoyed many a string cheese, some blueberries and granola bars. The front seat enjoyed Turtle Chex Mix Bars, compliments of My Blog Spark. They were a tasty treat–sweet chocolate, salty peanuts, caramel–yum! By looking at the wrapper, I learned *If* you were to eat, say, one bar, you’d have a delicious snack of less than 130 calories and 4 grams of fiber–great deal, eh? BgK and I, well, we were stuck in traffic….so we each ate three. I’m not doing the math on the calories, but hey, we each got 12 g of fiber! Yay us!

Friday, we visited friends whom we haven’t seen since Mam was about 5 months old. They now have twins just younger than Jr. I think they were a little nervous that our visit would turn into blog post….I promised them it wouldn’t. Or least it wouldn’t with pictures and what not. I will share with you what I learned from them though: *If* your are a shopping-cart-cover kind of mom…here is another use for said cover..the baby bucket swings at the park. I’m sure styles of cover and swing vary, but it the planets are aligned, the cover fits over the swing so you get the same sort of protection you do when you use it on a shopping cart. *If* you want such a thing.

On the way home, we stopped by Rainbow Cone, that southside Chicago institution that the Kahuna family knows and loves. What I learned: they don’t really have public restrooms, but the Kia dealership next door is happy to oblige a 4 yr old doing the potty dance….

Saturday we drove from NW Indiana up the O’Hare vicinity for a family birthday party–many cousins, much fun. On the way up, I remember that we really need to get one of those plastic holders for our I-PASS….my arm got a little tired.

Once the rain let up, the kids went outside and MAM learned to hit off a tee!! Didn’t your daughter learn how to do that in a dress and sparkly shoes? Mine did!

*I* learned though, that three days in a row of long car rides wears on a child. On the way home, we were able to see fireworks all the way from O’Hare to my parents’ house. MAM though, was done with the car business. “I don’t want to watch the fireworks in the car! I want to watch them on a blanket!!!”

Which is what we did Sunday. For whatever reason, the fireworks in Indy were postponed til last night. We tweeted up with a friend, found a great grassy knoll (no, I’m not telling you where, because there was free parking, restroom access and no crowds) and watched the show. On a blanket. Because really, that is the best way to watch them!

In a nutshell: I’m the mom to two through open, domestic adoption. I’m a teacher fully enjoying summer break. I also write for Grown in My Heart, an adoption network. I just recently learned about Twitter, and how to operate iTunes. My main goal some afternoons is to get both kids asleep in the backseat of the car, hit a drive thru for an iced coffee and park in the shade with a good book.
